Gloves! Gloves! Don't forget the gloves! Greg has to wear gloves when cutting onions or the smell remains on his fingers, no matter how much he washes his hands.

LOL I actually thought you carved the onions for that first picture!

Too clever! Still not sure if it's the eyes, mouth, or nose - maybe a little of all of them. Sometimes I hold a matchstick in my teeth, but results vary. ;D Shallots aren't nearly as nasty as onions; in some ways, I love their subtle spark over their popular cousins.

Haha, no way I could to that.

Aleta - I can't use gloves while I'm using a knife because it makes me fearful that I might cut myself more easily.

Hi Susan, you are right that shallots aren't as bad as onions and I, too, do prefer their sweetness.

Usually I put onions for a few minutes in the freezer before cutting them. Helps cut down on the spraying juice and fumes :)

My momma told me to stick my head in the freezer. I topped that and just moved to Alaska. Open the window, turn on the oven vent, voila. No more tears.

try putting a slice of bread in your mouth, works for me. Not the whole piece in the mouth...i use half of a slice and half of that is sticking out of my mouth.
